Finding calm in the chaos

The end of the year often brings a mix of excitement and overwhelm. Between Christmas preparations, end-of-school-year activities, and work deadlines before the holiday shutdown, it’s easy to feel like there’s never enough time. If you’re feeling pulled in a hundred directions, I want you to hear this: you don’t need to do everything perfectly, or even have to have everything sorted.
Yoga has taught me a powerful lesson about this time of year: compassion starts with ourselves. When we allow ourselves to slow down, even for just a few minutes a day, we create space for calm and clarity. It’s not about achieving the perfect posture, completing the perfect to-do list, or somehow ‘being ready’ for the holidays. Rather it’s about giving yourself permission to breathe.
Take a Daily Breather
One of the simplest ways I’ve found to create that pause is to take a daily breather, right where you are. Even a few minutes can make a difference:
Desk breaks: Sit tall, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Let your shoulders drop and your jaw soften.
Gentle movement: A few rounds of Cat-Cow or Sun Salutations can wake up your body, get the blood moving, and help your breath flow more easily.
Mindful awareness: Notice the sensations in your body, the rhythm of your breath, and let thoughts come and go without judging them.
Sneaky Yoga Moments
Even if your days are busy, there are small, “sneaky” ways to bring yoga (and presence) into your routine :
Whilst waiting for the kettle to boil : Roll your shoulders slowly back and down, stretch your arms overhead, or gently twist side to side.
Waiting in line: Lengthen your spine, lift your chest, and take 3–5 deep, slow breaths.
Walking to the car or around the office: Engage your core, notice your feet grounding, and swing your arms gently to release tension.
Before bed: Roll your neck and shoulders, wiggle your fingers and toes, and let your body settle into rest.
These small moments aren’t about perfection - they’re about reminding yourself that movement and presence can fit anywhere, even in a busy schedule.
The Gift of Presence
It’s about giving yourself the gift of presence and not about adding another task to your already busy days. Just a few minutes of mindful movement or breath work can help you approach your day with more patience, energy, and ease.
As the year winds down, try to remember: your value isn’t in what you accomplish or how perfect things look. It’s in the moments you take to care for yourself, the gentle pauses that remind you of your own strength, and the presence you bring to the people and tasks around you.
If you’d like, I’ve created a 10-minute desk break video to help you release tension, reset your posture, and invite a moment of calm into even the busiest days. It’s a simple, practical way to stay grounded amidst the holiday rush.
Take a breath. Move a little. Be kind to yourself. You don’t have to do it all.
